Ivey's, formally J. B. Ivey & Company, was a Charlotte, North Carolina-based department store chain founded by Joseph Benjamin Ivey. J. B. Ivey opened his first store on North Tryon Street on February 19, 1900. Poor sales at that site led to a move later that year to the first block of West Trade Street. The growing business relocated to 13 North Tryon Street in fall 1914. George M. Ivey, the founder's only son, joined the company in 1920 and helped convert it from a partnership to a corporation, a process completed in 1922. A new Charlotte store opened in 1924 and remained the chain's only location until expansion began with Greenville, South Carolina, in 1935 and Asheville, North Carolina, in 1937. Ivey's became publicly traded in the 1940s. Marshall Field's purchased the company in 1980, and BATUS Retail Group acquired Marshall Field's in 1982. BATUS sold Ivey's to Dillard's, Inc. in 1990, ending the Ivey's name as an independent department store chain.
