Just For Feet
Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Just For Feet began in 1977 with a single Birmingham, Alabama, store and grew into a destination for athletic and outdoor footwear, apparel, and the kind of big-box spectacle that treated buying sneakers like entering an arena. The company went public in 1994 and expanded rapidly, with superstores positioned largely outside major malls across the South, Midwest, Southwest, and Puerto Rico.
By 1999, the Birmingham retailer was facing a very different finish line. Just For Feet filed for Chapter 11 protection on November 4, 1999; its case converted to Chapter 7 liquidation in 2000. Federal regulators later described accounting misconduct that had overstated reported results, while excess inventory and debt compounded the collapse.
Footstar acquired the Just For Feet name and 79 stores in a bankruptcy asset sale completed March 7, 2000. The brand continued as a Footstar chain, though the stores struggled. Footstar operated 88 Just For Feet locations as of January 31, 2004, then sought liquidation of the entire chain that March. By 2004, the last stores had gone dark: one more enormous retail footprint headed for the corporate ghost aisle.
Our Just For Feet collection celebrates the loud, ambitious, sneaker-stacked era when an off-mall shoe store could feel like a sporting event—minus the scoreboard, plus considerably more fluorescent lighting.
