Oshman's Sporting Goods

Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Oshman’s began in 1919, when Jacob S. “Jake” Oshman opened a small dry-goods store in Richmond, Texas. After moving to Houston and liquidating the inventory of the bankrupt Crawford-Austin army-surplus store, he noticed that fishing and hunting gear moved fast. A sporting-goods destiny was quietly loading itself into the cart.

In 1933, Oshman opened his first Houston sporting-goods store, then expanded the assortment to include sportswear, western wear, equipment, footwear, and the assorted necessities of a weekend spent pretending you were going pro. The business incorporated as Oshman’s Sporting Goods in Delaware in 1946 and grew from Houston across Texas and beyond.

By 1965, Oshman’s was Texas’s largest sporting-goods chain. The company later operated both conventional shops and larger Oshman’s SuperSports USA locations. Its longtime corporate home was Houston’s East End, at 2302 Maxwell Lane, even as the chain reached markets across the Southwest, West, and South.

Gart Sports acquired Oshman’s in June 2001, bringing 58 stores into the Denver-based retailer’s portfolio. After Gart’s 2003 combination with The Sports Authority, the familiar regional name entered the corporate blender; legacy Oshman’s stores were rebranded to Sports Authority during 2005.

Our Oshman's Sporting Goods collection celebrates the Houston original that supplied jerseys, sneakers, fishing tackle, golf gear, and the glorious belief that one more piece of equipment would finally fix your game.
