GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a reminder of a sporting goods story rooted in Texas. In 1919, J.S. “Jake” Oshman opened a dry-goods shop in Richmond; by 1933, the first Oshman Outdoor Store was serving Houston customers seeking fishing and hunting supplies. The business grew into the Southwest’s largest sporting goods chain by 1965 and continued to evolve through new store formats. This mug honors Oshman’s history for collectors and fans of local retail heritage.
Oshman's began in 1919, when J.S. “Jake” Oshman, an immigrant from Latvia, opened Oshman's Dry Goods in Richmond, Texas. In 1931, he moved to Houston after buying the stock of bankrupt army-surplus retailer Crawford-Austin and liquidating its inventory. Discovering strong demand for fishing and hunting supplies, he opened the first Oshman Outdoor Store in downtown Houston, at Capitol and Fannin, in 1933. The business was incorporated as Oshman's Sporting Goods in 1946 and moved to larger premises at 902 Main as it grew. It expanded through Greater Houston and into Bay City, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, and Pasadena. By 1965, the year Oshman died, it was Texas's largest sporting goods chain and the largest in the southwestern United States. The company expanded in the Los Angeles area during the 1970s and bought the Abercrombie and Fitch trade name in 1978. By 1987, it operated traditional stores, a Super Sports USA store, and Abercrombie and Fitch stores. In 1991, it consolidated California and Texas division offices at its Houston headquarters. Gart Sports announced its purchase in 2001; that June, Oshman's merged into Gart's wholly owned subsidiary, GSC Acquisition Corp. Many former Oshman's locations became Sports Authority stores, which later closed after the retailer filed for bankruptcy in 2016.
