Watt & Shand

Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Watt & Shand began in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on March 9, 1878, when Peter T. Watt, James Shand, and Gilbert Thompson opened the New York Store. The shop sold dry goods, fancy goods, and upscale merchandise—the civilized necessities before online carts and package-tracking anxiety.

After Thompson died during the first year, Watt and Shand renamed the operation Watt, Shand and Company. They moved to 8–10 East King Street in 1880, shortened the name to Watt & Shand in 1885, and kept expanding. Its Penn Square flagship grew by absorbing neighboring properties and became a defining fixture of downtown Lancaster.

The store added a Park City Center location in 1970, giving the old-school merchant a mall-era survival plan. By 1991, that branch generated most of the company’s sales and nearly all of its profit. The Bon-Ton Stores acquired Watt & Shand in 1992, ending its independent run and converting the locations to Bon-Ton stores.

The former downtown flagship closed in March 1995. Much of the building was later removed for the Lancaster Marriott and convention-center project, but its historic Beaux Arts façade was retained—because even retail ghosts deserve a dramatic entrance.
