Watt & Shand was a department store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with roots in the New York Store, opened on March 9, 1878, by Peter T. Watt, Gilbert Thompson, and James Shand. The store sold foreign and domestic dry goods, upscale merchandise, and famously began with a $5 wool plaid shawl. After Thompson died during the first year, Watt and Shand renamed the business Watt, Shand and Company. The store moved to 8-10 East King Street in 1880, shortened its name to Watt & Shand in 1885, and expanded into 6 East King Street. A ladies' ready-to-wear department was added in 1889. Expansion continued through acquisitions, including buildings at 23 Penn Square in 1905, Appel & Weber jewelry in 1959, and Hager's Department Store in 1968. A Park City Center location opened in 1970. The downtown store completed a three-year renovation in 1984, but the business was purchased by The Bon-Ton in 1992. The downtown location closed in March 1995. Its Beaux Arts building, later listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was demolished in 2006, while its facade was preserved in a hotel and convention complex.
