GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep the story of ALCO Stores close with this double-sided keychain charm. The company traces its roots to Duckwall's, a Kansas five-and-dime business founded in 1901, and became a discount retailer with the opening of its first ALCO store in Clovis in 1966. From expansion across multiple states to bankruptcy and the final store closures in 2015, its history offers a compact reminder of a regional chain that left a lasting mark on local shopping. A keepsake for collectors and former customers alike.
Founded in Kansas in 1901 by Alva Lease Duckwall, the company began with five-and-dime variety stores known as Duckwall's. It entered discount retail when the first ALCO store opened in Clovis, New Mexico, on August 15, 1966. Following acquisitions in the 1980s, the company had 127 ALCO stores and 33 Duckwall stores in 14 states by 1985. Duckwall-ALCO filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1989 and emerged in 1991 after receiving financing from GE Capital. In 2010, the company announced that its Duckwall stores would close, ending that name; it later became ALCO Stores, Inc. Corporate headquarters moved from Abilene, Kansas, to Coppell, Texas, in 2013, while the distribution center remained in Abilene. ALCO filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy again in October 2014, and a liquidation firm acquired the chain. All stores closed by March 2015. Shopko acquired 20 former locations, Bomgaars took over 12, and Orscheln Farm & Home acquired the Abilene distribution center. Earlier acquisitions included Sterling Stores, David's, Hornsby, Val, and stores from Perry Brothers.
