The Wabash Railroad, reporting mark WAB, was a Class I carrier serving the mid-central United States and Ontario. Its name came from the Wabash River, which flows from northwest Ohio across northern Indiana and along part of the Illinois-Indiana border before joining the Ohio River. The system grew through mergers, reorganizations, and acquisitions. Its earliest predecessor was Illinois' Northern Cross Railroad, while the Toledo and Wabash and Western Railroad emerged in 1865. Renamed Wabash Railway in January 1877, the system became the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway in 1879 and Wabash Railroad in 1889. Key connections included Chicago, Kansas City, Detroit, Buffalo, St. Louis, and Toledo, with a direct Kansas City-Detroit freight route. Following a 1915 foreclosure, it was reorganized as Wabash Railway, then reconstituted as Wabash Railroad in 1941. The Norfolk and Western Railway leased it in 1964. The corporate entity remained on paper until the successor system formally merged it in 1991.
