The Denver and Rio Grande Railway was incorporated on October 27, 1870, by General William Jackson Palmer. Its first rails left Denver in 1871, reaching Colorado Springs that October. Built initially as a 3-foot narrow-gauge system, it expanded through Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah, serving mining districts and carrying coal and mineral traffic. The original company entered receivership in 1884 and was succeeded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in 1886. After the Denver & Rio Grande merged with the Rio Grande Western in 1901, the system consolidated in 1908. The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad was incorporated in 1920 and formally emerged on July 31, 1921. Its routes included the Royal Gorge, Tennessee Pass, and the Moffat Tunnel line. In 1947 it merged with the Denver and Salt Lake Railroad. Rio Grande Industries acquired Southern Pacific Transportation Company in 1988, with Southern Pacific becoming the operating identity. Union Pacific acquired the combined system in 1996; heritage railways preserve portions of the former network.
