Davison's began in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1891, with roots in the Davison & Douglas company. In 1901, following E. Lee Douglas's retirement and Frederic John Paxon's appointment as treasurer, its name changed to Davison-Paxon-Stokes; in early 1927, it became Davison Paxon Co. R.H. Macy & Co. acquired the business in 1925, and its stores continued to use the Davison's name for decades while openly identifying with Macy's. The chain grew across Georgia and South Carolina, with downtown stores in Athens, Augusta, Macon, Columbus, and Columbia, South Carolina. In 1959, it opened a suburban store at Lenox Square in Atlanta, then added mall locations in later decades. Its downtown Atlanta flagship stood on Peachtree Street, at 200 Peachtree. On February 1, 1985, Davison's and Macy's Midwest were combined as the Macy's Atlanta division. By November 1985, all Davison's stores had been renamed Macy's. In 2003, the downtown store closed, and most former Davison's locations were also closed as Rich's and Macy's consolidated under the Rich's-Macy's name. The Atlanta retail legacy thus spans a locally rooted department store, expansion through the region, and transition into a national retail identity.
