K&B, short for Katz & Besthoff, was a New Orleans drugstore chain founded in 1905. Gustave Katz and Sydney J. Besthoff began the business at 732 Canal Street, and the company expanded throughout the 20th century into a regional Gulf Coast chain. K&B became especially recognizable for its signature purple presentation, used on store signs, cash registers, employee uniforms, and more. The shade entered local vocabulary as “K&B purple.” Its stores carried private-label household goods, liquor, and signature ice creams, while the company also ran an independent credit card program. K&B’s later headquarters were at K&B Plaza near Lee Circle in the New Orleans Central Business District; the company bought the building in the mid-1970s. Its earlier headquarters and warehouse at 900 Camp Street was donated to become the Contemporary Arts Center’s headquarters at the start of the 1980s. Rite Aid purchased K&B’s assets in 1997 and rebranded the chain, but the K&B Plaza name remains part of the city’s corporate landscape.
