Kenner Products was founded in 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio, by brothers Albert, Philip and Joseph L. Steiner. Named for the street near its original offices north of Cincinnati Union Terminal, the company became an early national user of television advertising beginning in 1958. Its Gooney Bird mascot arrived in 1962, followed by the "It's Kenner! It's fun!" slogan. General Mills purchased Kenner in 1967, and in 1971 merged its Rainbow Crafts division into the business, bringing Play-Doh into the line. General Mills spun off Kenner and Parker Brothers in 1985 as Kenner Parker Toys, Inc.; the new company sold its Lionel Trains division the next year. Tonka acquired Kenner Parker in 1987 and reconstituted Kenner as a division. Hasbro acquired Tonka, including Kenner, in 1991. In 2000, Hasbro closed Kenner's Cincinnati offices and merged its product lines into Hasbro. The Kenner brand returned in 2010 with Star Wars: The Vintage Collection.
