The Kerr Drug Golf Towel pairs a practical course-day essential with a meaningful piece of Carolina retail history. Founded in 1951, Kerr Drug grew from its first Chapel Hill location into a Raleigh-based pharmacy chain remembered for local service across North Carolina. The design celebrates that recognizable legacy and the Naturally Kerr chapter that followed. Kerr Drug was an American drugstore chain based in Raleigh, North Carolina, with stores throughout the state. Banks Kerr founded the company in 1951 after graduating as valedictorian from the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy. Its first store opened at University Mall in Chapel Hill. In January 1995, Thrift Drug, then owned by JCPenney, acquired Kerr's 97-store chain. During JCPenney's attempted acquisition of Eckerd Drug, federal regulators required 161 stores in North Carolina and South Carolina to be divested. Those stores were acquired by New Kerr Drug, an entity owned by Thrift's former president. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy dedicated Banks D. Kerr Hall in 2002. In 2009, Kerr sold 11 Charleston-area stores to CVS and refocused on North Carolina. That year it introduced Naturally Kerr formats in Raleigh and Asheville. Walgreens purchased Kerr's remaining 76 stores and distribution center in 2013, later converting remaining locations to its own name.
