GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take a piece of Tampa and Gulf Coast history along on your next journey with this Maas Brothers passport cover. The store began as Abe Maas’s Dry Goods Palace in 1886, and Isaac joined the business the next year. Over time, Maas Brothers grew from a small shop into a regional department store chain, with a story shaped by expansion, changing ownership and familiar store identities. A thoughtful travel companion for Florida natives, former shoppers and collectors of regional retail history.
Abe Maas opened the Dry Goods Palace in Tampa, Florida, on December 10, 1886. His brother Isaac formally joined him in 1887, and the business became Maas Brothers. From a small shop, it grew into a Gulf Coast department store chain. Its largest early store opened in 1921; by 1929 the company was prominent on Florida’s west coast. That year, the Maas brothers sold the business to Hahn Department Stores, renamed Allied Stores Corporation in 1935, while the Maas family continued to operate it. Branch expansion began in 1948, and the chain later added mall locations. In 1985 it absorbed Levy’s Savannah stores. Allied’s 1986 takeover by Robert Campeau was followed by consolidation with Jordan Marsh Florida in 1987; the combined stores adopted the Maas Brothers/Jordan Marsh name in 1989. After Allied and Federated filed for bankruptcy in 1990, the downtown Tampa flagship closed in 1991. On October 20, 1991, the stores officially became Burdines. Burdines and other Federated divisions, except Bloomingdale’s, converted to Macy’s in 2005.
