GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Carry a piece of Brooklyn retail history on your travels with this Martin's luggage tag. The family business began in a Fulton and Bridge streets blouse shop, where Hyman Zeitz opened a coat and suit department in a story dating to at least 1903. In 1924, the store moved into the seven-story Offerman Building, becoming a landmark chapter in the city's shopping past. For collectors, this travel accessory recalls Martin's growth from a neighborhood shop to a six-store regional chain shaped by the rise of suburban shopping.
Martin's grew from a coat and suit department opened by Hyman Zeitz in an existing blouse shop at Fulton and Bridge streets in Brooklyn, with a history dating to at least 1903. Zeitz eventually bought the shop, and in 1924 the business moved next door into the seven-story Offerman Building. After his death in 1930, his son Fred J. Zeitz became president. Architect Morris Lapidus designed a modernized entrance completed in 1947. Beginning in the 1950s, Martin's expanded into suburban New York, opening in Garden City in 1952, Babylon in 1956 and Huntington in 1962. Hyman Zeitz's grandson Levin became president in 1966; another grandson, Robert Rosenthal, took over in 1972. The chain opened at Smith Haven Mall in 1969 and at Riverside Square Mall in Hackensack, New Jersey, in 1977, reaching six stores. As profits declined, the family-held company was sold in October 1977 to Seedman Merchandising Group, which operated Times Square Stores. The Fulton Street store closed in 1979, and the remaining locations closed or changed names within a few years. The Offerman Building was designated a New York City Landmark in 2005.
