Michigan Motor Car Company Heavy Knit Quarter-Zip Sweatshirt
Product Details & Size Guide
The Michigan Motor Car Company joined the story of early American motoring in Kalamazoo, building on a buggy maker’s first motorized high-wheeler and moving into dedicated car production in 1911. This heavy knit quarter-zip sweatshirt connects that history with the Model 40, promoted as the Mighty Michigan, and a marque whose final models appeared in 1913. It is suited to car events, relaxed weekends, and enthusiasts who value the ingenuity and uncertainty behind early automobile companies.
The Michigan automobile was made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, from 1904 to 1913 by the Michigan Buggy Company and, from 1911, its subsidiary, the Michigan Motor Car Company. Founded in 1883 by M. Henry Lane and Frank B. Lay, the buggy maker first offered a motorized high-wheeler in 1904, sometimes called the Kalamazoo. Serious automobile production began in 1911, when company officials Victor L. Palmer, Frank B. Lay Jr. and George T. Lay took part in forming the motor car company. Engineer W. H. Cameron designed its new car, with body styling by John A. Campbell. The Model B used outside-supplied parts, including engines from Buda Engine Co. and Falls Engine Co.; the Michigan Buggy Company made its coachwork. In 1912, the range expanded to the Model 40 and junior Model 33. The Michigan 40, promoted as the “Mighty Michigan,” continued into 1913. Underpricing and financial and management problems brought the venture to an end. An effort by Pittsburgh distributor Edward F. Gerber to continue production failed, and the assets went to bankruptcy auction. In 1915, the plant was sold and States Motor Car Company moved in to build its Greyhound light car.
