GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Bring a thread of American furniture history along on your travels. Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams began their upholstery company in Taylorsville, North Carolina, in 1989, pairing Gold’s retail experience with Williams’s design vision. The business grew through changing ownership, opened a Washington, D.C., showroom in 2007, and closed its original operations in 2023. This luggage tag celebrates that distinctive company story, from its North Carolina beginnings to a planned brand revival.
Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams founded their upholstery company in 1989 in Taylorsville, North Carolina. Gold had worked as a furniture buyer at Bloomingdale's, while Williams, a former graphic artist, designed the line. In the early 1990s, the founders bought an existing Taylorsville factory and developed employee amenities that included air conditioning, a gym, a health clinic, child care, and a cafeteria. Rowe Furniture acquired the company in 1998, with the founders continuing to manage it. Gold and Williams bought it back with New York investors in 2002 and renamed it Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams to recognize both founders. The company opened its first furniture showroom in Washington, D.C., in 2007 and later operated about 24 showrooms. The Stephens Group acquired it in late 2014. On August 26, 2023, the company announced an immediate closure of its operations, including its North Carolina facilities and showrooms; it cited an inability to secure additional financing. Bankruptcy proceedings followed. Surya acquired the brand's intellectual property, inventory, and manufacturing equipment in November 2023, with plans to reintroduce it as a trade-only brand and revive production at its original North Carolina facilities.
