The Northern Pacific Railway, reporting mark NP, was chartered by the U.S. Congress on July 2, 1864, to connect the Great Lakes with Puget Sound. Groundbreaking took place at Carlton, Minnesota, on February 15, 1870. Construction advanced from Minnesota and from Kalama, Washington Territory, but financing difficulties and the Panic of 1873 interrupted progress; the company entered bankruptcy in 1875. Reorganized under successive leadership, the line was completed in Montana Territory when former President Ulysses S. Grant drove the ceremonial Last Spike on September 8, 1883. Northern Pacific served Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, and an international branch toward Winnipeg. Its headquarters moved from Brainerd to Saint Paul, Minnesota. The railroad carried farm products, cattle, timber, minerals, consumer goods, and passengers, with the North Coast Limited as its flagship train. Northern Pacific merged with other lines in 1970 to form Burlington Northern Railroad. Burlington Northern merged with Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1996, becoming BNSF Railway.
