A Qwest passport cover gives international travel a connection to the company’s global-minded telecom era. Founded in 1996 and renamed Qwest in 1997, the Denver-based carrier expanded beyond its railroad-route fiber origins through network growth and acquisitions including EUnet International. Qwest Communications International, Inc. was a U.S. telecommunications carrier founded in 1996 by Philip Anschutz. It began as Southern Pacific Telecommunications Company, building all-digital fiber-optic infrastructure along railroad lines owned by Southern Pacific Transportation Company to serve high-speed data and T1 customers. After Southern Pacific merged with Union Pacific in 1997, the telecom assets remained separate; the company was renamed Qwest and became publicly traded in June 1997. Qwest expanded through acquisitions including SuperNet in 1997, LCI in 1998, and Icon CMT and EUnet International in 1998. On June 30, 2000, Qwest merged with US West, bringing local telephone operations across 14 western and midwestern states into Qwest. Headquartered at 1801 California Street in Denver, Colorado, it offered voice, long-distance, DSL, data, Internet backbone, wireless and selected television services. CenturyLink announced its acquisition of Qwest on April 22, 2010; the merger closed April 1, 2011, and Qwest began doing business as CenturyLink in August 2011.
