Make a casual gathering a toast to Swedish automotive history. Saab Automobile grew from an automotive project begun in 1945, and the Saab 92 entered production in 1949. The marque went on to earn a devoted following through cars such as the Saab 900 and later 9-series models. Its changing ownership and final production chapters make the story especially meaningful to collectors. This can cooler brings a little Saab enthusiasm to a backyard get-together, garage hangout or car-club picnic.
Saab Automobile began in Sweden in 1945 as an automotive project of aircraft maker Saab AB. The first production car, the Saab 92, entered production in 1949. Car assembly and the automotive headquarters moved to Trollhättan in 1948. The range developed through the Saab 93, 95, 96 and 99; in 1968 Saab AB merged with Swedish vehicle manufacturer Scania-Vabis to form Saab-Scania. The Saab 900 arrived in 1978 and became the company’s best-selling model, followed by the 9000 in the mid-1980s. In 1989 the car division became the independent Saab Automobile AB, with General Motors and Investor AB each holding half. GM acquired the remaining shares in 2000. After GM sold Saab to Spyker in 2010, financial trouble led to bankruptcy in December 2011. In June 2012, National Electric Vehicle Sweden acquired the bankrupt estate. Production of petrol-powered 9-3 sedans resumed briefly in 2013, but ended in 2014. NEVS later lost the right to use the Saab name; the aerospace company Saab AB retained ownership of the name.
