It later established a second focus city at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina, and added routes from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The airline also sold onboard merchandise and advertising on aircraft. Rising fuel costs and a weakening economy contributed to its shutdown announcement on April 4, 2008; its last flights operated the following day. Skybus sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. At closure, it employed about 450 people, mostly in the Columbus area, and operated 13 Airbus A319 aircraft, including leased planes.
