Trans World Airlines began as Transcontinental & Western Air, formed in 1930 through a merger of several carriers to serve a coast-to-coast route from New York City to Los Angeles by way of St. Louis and Kansas City. It moved its headquarters to Kansas City in 1931 and adopted the Trans World Airlines name in 1950. Howard Hughes gained control in the 1940s; after World War II, the airline added international routes, including service to Paris in 1946. TWA introduced jet service in 1959 and opened its landmark Trans World Flight Center at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport in 1962. After deregulation, the airline was separated from its holding company in 1983 and came under Carl Icahn’s control in 1985. It acquired Ozark Air Lines in 1986 and shifted its main hub to St. Louis. Financial strain led to bankruptcy restructurings in 1992 and 1995. In January 2001, TWA filed for bankruptcy for the third and final time and was acquired by American Airlines. TWA continued as an LLC under American until July 1, 2003; American closed the St. Louis hub in 2009.
