The Uptons Hoodie / Sweatshirt is a wearable salute to a familiar department store name from the late twentieth-century Southeast. Starting with a Roswell Mall location in 1985, Uptons grew rapidly, served communities across seven states, and closed after 1999. Its story links Atlanta-area business history with the lasting memories of mall shopping. Wear it for a relaxed connection to a former favorite store and its regional legacy.
Uptons was an Atlanta-based department store chain serving the Southeastern United States. Its first store opened in 1985 at Roswell Mall in Roswell, Georgia, followed by two additional stores elsewhere in Atlanta. Growth accelerated in 1987 when Uptons acquired 14 stores from Meyers-Arnold of Greenville, South Carolina. The chain later expanded again through the 1996 acquisition of 37 locations from the Florida-based J. Byrons department store chain. In 1997, Uptons moved its headquarters from Norcross, a suburb of metropolitan Atlanta, to the nearby Peachtree Corners area in Technology Park Atlanta. Stores operated in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. In July 1999, owner American Retail Group concluded that continuing the chain was too costly. Uptons was closed in 1999, and by 2000 the final stores had shut down, ending a chain that had reached 75 locations.
