The Uptons Kids Tee / T-Shirt brings a remembered department store name into a new generation of family stories. Uptons opened near Atlanta at Roswell Mall in 1985 and grew into a familiar Southeastern chain before closing around 2000. Uptons was a department store chain based in Atlanta, Georgia, serving markets primarily across the Southeastern United States. Its first store opened in 1985 at Roswell Mall in Roswell, Georgia, followed by two additional stores in other parts of Atlanta. Growth accelerated in 1987 when Uptons acquired 14 stores from Meyers-Arnold, a Greenville, South Carolina retailer. In 1996, the company acquired 37 locations from the Florida-based J. Byrons department store chain, expanding its regional footprint. The following year, Uptons moved its headquarters from Norcross, a suburban Atlanta community, to the nearby Peachtree Corners area in Technology Park Atlanta. In July 1999, parent company American Retail Group concluded that maintaining the chain was too costly. The business subsequently closed, and the final stores were shut by 2000. At its end, the chain had operated seventy-five stores in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
