The design celebrates a department store chain that opened at Roswell Mall in 1985, built an Atlanta-area corporate identity, and expanded throughout the Southeast during the 1990s. It is an easy desk addition for former associates, longtime shoppers, retail-history enthusiasts, and collectors who enjoy a daily connection to a familiar regional store name.
Uptons was an Atlanta-based department store chain serving the Southeastern United States. Its first store opened in 1985 at Roswell Mall in Roswell, Georgia, followed by two additional stores elsewhere in Atlanta. Growth accelerated in 1987 when Uptons acquired 14 stores from Meyers-Arnold of Greenville, South Carolina. The chain later expanded again through the 1996 acquisition of 37 locations from the Florida-based J. Byrons department store chain. In 1997, Uptons moved its headquarters from Norcross, a suburb of metropolitan Atlanta, to the nearby Peachtree Corners area in Technology Park Atlanta. Stores operated in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. In July 1999, owner American Retail Group concluded that continuing the chain was too costly. Uptons was closed in 1999, and by 2000 the final stores had shut down, ending a chain that had reached 75 locations.
