GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a reminder of a much-loved chapter in music retail. Virgin Megastores began with a record-retail venture in 1976 and opened its first Megastore near Marble Arch in 1979. The chain grew through the 1980s and 1990s, bringing its destination-style shops to customers across the UK and other parts of the world. Its story reflects both a recognizable British retail name and the changing landscape of international business. This mug is suited to former shoppers, music fans, and collectors of brand history.
Virgin Megastores grew from a record-retail venture founded by Richard Branson in early 1976, following his and Nik Powell’s Notting Hill Gate shop, Virgin Records and Tapes. The first Megastore opened in London in 1979, at the end of Oxford Street near Marble Arch. Virgin Megastores and Virgin Records operated as separate businesses. Under Ian Duffell and, later, Simon Wright, the chain expanded through the 1980s and 1990s to more than 100 UK stores and locations across several continents. In 1992, the Virgin Group and Blockbuster formed a US joint venture; other markets also operated through local owners, licenses and partners. By 2001, worldwide stores were divided between the Virgin Group and Lagardère Group. In 2007, the UK and Irish business separated from Virgin and its stores were rebranded Zavvi; after Zavvi entered administration in 2008, its stores closed or were sold. The US chain announced closures in 2009, while Australian stores closed by 2010. Japan’s stores were acquired by Culture Convenience Club and rebranded Tsutaya by 2009. After extensive international exits, the business was operating only in the Middle East and North Africa by 2015.
