Introduced by American Motors Corporation in 1970, the AMC Gremlin was compact, cheap, unmistakable, and shaped like absolutely nothing else on the road. Built to compete with smaller imports and rising fuel costs, the Gremlin gave buyers six-cylinder power, hatchback practicality, and styling that appeared to stop several feet earlier than expected.

And somehow, it worked.

AMC sold hundreds of thousands of Gremlins through 1978, turning its peculiar little compact into one of the most recognizable American cars of the decade. It was mocked, loved, customized, raced, and eventually became exactly the sort of automotive oddball collectors wish they had never sold.

Half economy car. Half muscle-car attitude. Roughly three-quarters of a normal automobile.
