A Kessler's dad cap brings an understated local-history reference to daily errands, ball games, and road trips. It recognizes the family-owned Georgia department store chain whose first store opened in Macon in 1914 and whose downtown Atlanta location became its main store in 1933. With locations in communities including Decatur, Newnan, Rome, and Smyrna, Kessler's remained a regional fixture until the family closed the chain in 1998.
Kessler's was a family-owned lower-end department store chain in Georgia. Its first department store opened in Macon in 1914. In 1932, the Kessler family moved to Atlanta, and Hyman and Walter H. Kessler opened a downtown Atlanta store the following year, in 1933. That store became the chain's main location. Over time, Kessler's operated seven additional Georgia locations in Smyrna, Rome, Newnan, West Point, Decatur, West Atlanta, and Canton. The company remained identified with its family ownership and its network of stores serving Atlanta and other Georgia communities. The Kessler family closed all of the stores in 1998, ending the chain's retail operations. The former downtown Atlanta store was later converted into condominiums. Kessler's history connects an early Macon opening, a move to Atlanta during the 1930s, and a long-running Georgia department store presence that concluded at the end of the twentieth century.
