Kessler's began as a Macon department store in 1914, then built its main downtown Atlanta presence after the Kessler family moved there in the 1930s. The family-operated chain expanded across Georgia before closing all stores in 1998. Kessler's was a family-owned lower-end department store chain in Georgia. Its first department store opened in Macon in 1914. In 1932, the Kessler family moved to Atlanta, and Hyman and Walter H. Kessler opened a downtown Atlanta store the following year. That downtown location became the chain's main store. At its later extent, Kessler's operated the main downtown Atlanta store plus seven additional locations in Smyrna, Rome, Newnan, West Point, Decatur, West Atlanta, and Canton. The business remained associated with the Kessler family throughout its history. In 1998, the family closed all Kessler's stores, ending the chain's retail operations. The former downtown Atlanta store was subsequently converted into condominiums. Kessler's history connects an early Macon opening, a family relocation to Atlanta, and a multi-location Georgia department store presence that lasted into the late twentieth century.
