The Wiz

Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

The Wiz — better known to generations of shoppers as “Nobody Beats the Wiz” — was a consumer electronics powerhouse that became a fixture of the New York metropolitan area. Founded in 1977, the chain sold everything from televisions and stereos to VCRs, computers, CDs, and just about every other piece of technology you absolutely had to have at the time.

By the 1980s and 1990s, The Wiz seemed to be everywhere. Its relentlessly catchy advertising made “Nobody Beats the Wiz” nearly impossible to forget, while sponsorships of major New York-area sports teams helped turn the retailer into a regional institution. The brand even earned a memorable place in pop culture, including an appearance in Seinfeld.

Rapid expansion eventually caught up with the company. The Wiz entered bankruptcy in the late 1990s and was acquired by Cablevision, which kept the stores operating for several more years before closing the remaining locations in 2003.

Nobody beats the Wiz anymore — mostly because there isn’t a Wiz left to beat.

Our The Wiz collection celebrates the loud commercials, giant electronics stores, VHS-era technology, and unforgettable branding of one of the Northeast’s great retail ghosts.
