The AOL Instant Messenger heavy knit quarter-zip sweatshirt is made for revisiting the era when getting online meant checking your buddy list first. AIM shaped late-1990s and 2000s communication with screen names, presence alerts, and memorable away messages, remaining online from 1997 until 2017. AOL Instant Messenger, commonly known as AIM and sometimes styled aim, was AOL's instant messaging and presence-information program from 1997 to 2017. It launched in May 1997 as a stand-alone download for Microsoft Windows, growing from the "online messages" feature of AOL's original platform, written in PL/1 on a Stratus computer by Dave Brown. Using AOL's OSCAR protocol, with TOC also available for simpler clients, AIM became a major North American messaging service and was especially prominent in the United States. Its late-1990s and 2000s culture was closely associated with buddy lists, screen names, and frequently updated away messages among teens and college students. AOL acquired competitor ICQ in 1998 and competed with Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger. AIM later expanded across mobile and desktop platforms. Its audience declined as SMS, Google Talk, Facebook Messenger, iMessage, and WhatsApp changed online communication. Verizon acquired AOL in June 2015, then combined AOL and Yahoo in Oath Inc. in June 2017. AIM ended service on December 15, 2017.
