Conrail (Consolidated Rail Corporation) Unisex Quarter Zip Pullover
Layer up with a Conrail quarter zip pullover that honors a railroad legend of the Northeast. Conrail began service in 1976 after drawing together vital freight routes from multiple bankrupt carriers, then built a reputation around its blue power and Conrail Quality identity. Privatized in 1987 and largely divided in 1999, its influence remains visible through Shared Assets operations. A refined railfan layer for cool days, events, and collector gatherings.
Conrail, formally the Consolidated Rail Corporation, was created by the federal government to preserve potentially profitable freight lines from bankrupt Northeastern railroads. Incorporated in Pennsylvania on October 25, 1974, it began operations on April 1, 1976. Its system drew on Penn Central, Erie Lackawanna, Lehigh Valley, Reading, Central Railroad of New Jersey, Lehigh and Hudson River, and portions of Ann Arbor. Penn Central itself had resulted from the 1968 merger of the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central Railroad. After early losses, infrastructure rebuilding, regulatory change, and management improvements helped Conrail become profitable in the 1980s. The company was privatized in 1987. CSX and Norfolk Southern agreed in 1997 to acquire and divide most of Conrail; they took control in August 1998 and began operating their portions on June 1, 1999. Conrail remains jointly owned, operating Shared Assets Areas in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Detroit.
