Conrail (Consolidated Rail Corporation) Youth Hoodie / Sweatshirt
A Conrail youth hoodie celebrates the blue-locomotive legacy that still captures the imagination of railroad fans. Beginning operations in 1976, Conrail connected major Northeastern freight routes inherited from railroads including Penn Central, Reading, Erie Lackawanna, and Lehigh Valley. Its CR mark and Conrail Quality identity became icons of a changing railroad era. Great for young train watchers, family trips, railroad museums, and future collectors.
Conrail, formally the Consolidated Rail Corporation, was created by the federal government to preserve potentially profitable freight lines from bankrupt Northeastern railroads. Incorporated in Pennsylvania on October 25, 1974, it began operations on April 1, 1976. Its system drew on Penn Central, Erie Lackawanna, Lehigh Valley, Reading, Central Railroad of New Jersey, Lehigh and Hudson River, and portions of Ann Arbor. Penn Central itself had resulted from the 1968 merger of the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central Railroad. After early losses, infrastructure rebuilding, regulatory change, and management improvements helped Conrail become profitable in the 1980s. The company was privatized in 1987. CSX and Norfolk Southern agreed in 1997 to acquire and divide most of Conrail; they took control in August 1998 and began operating their portions on June 1, 1999. Conrail remains jointly owned, operating Shared Assets Areas in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Detroit.
