Lawsuits from recording companies, Metallica, and Dr. Dre led to an injunction, and Napster shut down its network in July 2001. After a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in June 2002, Roxio acquired Napster's brand and logos that November for $5.3 million. Roxio relaunched Napster in October 2003 as a licensed download and subscription service. Best Buy bought it in 2008, then sold it to Rhapsody in 2011. Rhapsody adopted the Napster name in 2016. Ownership later moved to MelodyVR, Hivemind and Algorand, and Infinite Reality, which acquired it in March 2025.
