Its Mosaic Netscape 0.9 browser arrived on October 13, 1994 and was renamed Netscape Navigator after the company adopted the Netscape name that November. Navigator quickly became a leading browser of the early web. Netscape went public on NASDAQ as NSCP on August 9, 1995. Competition with Microsoft Internet Explorer defined the first browser war. In January 1998, Netscape made future software free and launched the open-source Mozilla project; the Mozilla Organization later became the independent Mozilla Foundation in July 2003. AOL announced its acquisition of Netscape in November 1998, closing in March 1999. Netscape also made browser, server, e-commerce, portal, and Internet products. AOL ended Navigator development and support in 2008.
