In 1981, commodity trading firm Phibro Corporation acquired the business in a reverse merger that formed Salomon Inc. and took it public. The firm became known for fixed-income trading, corporate-bond underwriting, futures, options, securitization, and mortgage-backed securities. Travelers Group acquired Salomon in 1997 for $9 billion, then merged with Citicorp in 1998. Its combined investment banking operations became Salomon Smith Barney before being renamed Citigroup Global Markets Inc. in 2003.
