Make an introduction with a reference to a defining name in American finance. This Salomon Brothers metal business card holder celebrates the New York firm established in 1910, later renowned for fixed-income trading, corporate bonds, and the intensity of its Wall Street culture. A sharp desk or meeting companion for bankers, entrepreneurs, market historians, and collectors of legacy corporate names from the 1980s and 1990s.
Salomon Brothers, Inc. was an American multinational investment bank headquartered in New York City. Arthur, Herbert, and Percy Salomon founded the firm in 1910 with clerk Ben Levy, and it remained a partnership until the early 1980s. William Salomon became managing partner and head of the company in 1963; John Gutfreund succeeded him as head in 1978. Recognized as a bulge bracket firm in 1975, Salomon Brothers helped organize syndicates for a $1 billion Municipal Action Committee bond sale during New York City's fiscal crisis. In 1981, commodity trading firm Phibro Corporation acquired the business in a reverse merger that formed Salomon Inc. and took it public. The firm became known for fixed-income trading, corporate-bond underwriting, futures, options, securitization, and mortgage-backed securities. Travelers Group acquired Salomon in 1997 for $9 billion, then merged with Citicorp in 1998. Its combined investment banking operations became Salomon Smith Barney before being renamed Citigroup Global Markets Inc. in 2003.
