Drexel Burnham Lambert became one of the defining firms of 1980s Wall Street, turning high-yield “junk bonds” into a financial empire and helping bankroll some of the decade’s biggest corporate takeovers. With Michael Milken running its legendary Beverly Hills operation, Drexel went from Wall Street outsider to one of the most powerful investment banks in America.
Then the decade of excess sent the bill.
Federal investigations, securities violations, a collapsing junk-bond market, and disappearing confidence brought the empire down with remarkable speed. In 1990, Drexel Burnham Lambert filed for bankruptcy, ending one of the most spectacular rises and falls in Wall Street history.
They helped finance corporate takeovers. Eventually, the 1980s took over them.
