Founded in 1904 by brothers Edward and Franklyn Hutton, E.F. Hutton grew into one of America’s largest brokerage firms and one of the most recognizable names on Wall Street. By the 1970s and ’80s, its famous advertising had convinced America that when E.F. Hutton talked, everyone else should probably stop talking.

Then people started listening a little more closely.

A massive check-kiting scandal, regulatory trouble, financial losses, and the 1987 stock market crash left the once-mighty brokerage scrambling for survival. In 1988, E.F. Hutton was absorbed by Shearson Lehman, and the legendary name soon disappeared from Wall Street.

When E.F. Hutton talked, people listened. When the accountants started talking, things got considerably quieter.
