Allegheny Airlines Can Cooler
Keep the conversation flying with an Allegheny Airlines can cooler. The design honors a carrier known for connecting Pittsburgh and Washington National with cities across the Eastern United States, then expanding through the Lake Central and Mohawk mergers. For fans of Vistaliner, Vistacruiser, and Vistajet eras, it is an easygoing nod to the airline that became USAir on October 28, 1979.
Allegheny Airlines operated as a Pittsburgh-based local service carrier from 1953 to 1979, serving routes primarily across the Eastern United States. Its roots reached back to All American Aviation Company, founded by Richard C. du Pont and Alexis Felix du Pont Jr., which began mail delivery on March 7, 1939. Renamed All American Airways in 1949 as it shifted to passenger service, the company moved its headquarters to Washington National Airport that year. It became Allegheny Airlines on January 1, 1953. Network growth brought Detroit, Boston, La Guardia, Norfolk, Toronto, and southern destinations, while the 1968 Lake Central Airlines merger added Chicago and St. Louis. The 1972 Mohawk Airlines merger added Montreal, Minneapolis, and many New York cities. Allegheny introduced Vistaliner turboprops, Vistacruiser Convair 580s, and Vistajet DC-9s. On October 28, 1979, it adopted the USAir name, later becoming US Airways. US Airways was acquired by American Airlines in 2013.
