Atlantic Southeast Airlines Tin Candle
Bring a little regional-airline history into your space with a candle honoring Atlantic Southeast Airlines. Founded in the Atlanta area in 1979, ASA grew from Twin Otter service between Atlanta and Columbus into a defining Delta Connection name, later flying regional jets from Hartsfield-Jackson. This collector-minded piece recalls the College Park carrier, its commuter-airline roots, and its eventual transition into ExpressJet.
Atlantic Southeast Airlines, Inc. was incorporated on March 12, 1979, in the Atlanta area and began operations on June 27 with three 19-seat de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otters flying between Atlanta and Columbus, Georgia. The carrier added Embraer EMB-110 turboprops in 1980, acquired Southeastern Airlines in 1983, and joined Delta Connection on May 1, 1984 as one of the program's first regional partners. ASA introduced BAe 146-200 jet service in 1995, followed by Canadair CRJ200 service from its Atlanta hub in 1997. Delta Air Lines acquired the remaining ownership of ASA in 1999; SkyWest, Inc. acquired it in 2005. Based in College Park, Georgia, ASA operated primarily from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and flew for Delta Connection, later beginning United Express service in February 2010. Following its 2010 merger with ExpressJet, ASA adopted the ExpressJet name and branding in 2011. The FAA approved a single operating certificate in November 2011, and flights thereafter operated under ExpressJet.
