Bacon's Passport Cover
Travel with the memory of a classic Louisville name. This Bacon's passport cover celebrates the department store chain whose story began in 1845 with Bacon's Dry Goods and continued from the famous Fourth and Market flagship to stores across Kentucky and southern Indiana. For Louisville natives, Kentucky history fans, and collectors of regional retail memorabilia, it turns a practical travel essential into a reminder of hometown shopping traditions.
Bacon's was a Louisville, Kentucky-based department store chain with roots in Jeremiah Bacon's Bacon's Dry Goods, opened in 1845 on Market Street near Hancock Street. The business moved into a building four times larger in 1876, then opened its 115,000-square-foot flagship at Fourth and Market in 1901. The flagship, known for entrances on both streets and a spiraling atrium, operated until September 6, 1972, when it closed to make way for the Kentucky International Convention Center. Bacon's sons sold the store in 1903 to New York City-based H.B. Claflin & Company, owner of Stewart Dry Goods. After Claflin's 1914 bankruptcy, Ohio-based Mercantile Stores acquired Bacon's. Expansion included St. Matthews in 1953, Shively in 1956, Bashford Manor Mall in 1972, Owensboro in 1977, Louisville Galleria in 1982, and Mall St. Matthews in 1988. Mercantile Stores was acquired by Dillard's in 1998, retiring the Bacon's name.
