The club expanded beyond records with stereo equipment, reel-to-reel tapes, 8-tracks, and cassettes, while Columbia House emerged as the umbrella brand in the early 1970s. CBS Video Club joined the family in 1982, and Sony acquired the CBS Records Group, including Columbia House, in 1988. In 1991, Sony and Time Warner formed a joint venture that combined Columbia House with Time Life video and music clubs. BMG Direct Marketing acquired Columbia House in 2005 and consolidated it under BMG Music Service. Najafi Companies acquired the business in 2008, renaming it Direct Brands; music mail-order operations ended in 2009 while DVD and Blu-ray clubs continued under license. The Columbia House trademark remains owned by Sony Music Entertainment and is licensed to Edge Line Ventures LLC.
