Minolta Passport Cover
Travel with a quiet reference to Minolta, the Osaka camera company whose story began in 1928. Its path ran from early bellows cameras and the Minolta-35 rangefinder to SR-T, X-700, and Alpha, Maxxum, and Dynax systems used around the world. This passport cover suits film photographers, camera-history collectors, Rokkor fans, and travelers who appreciate Japanese optical design and the changing Minolta to Konica Minolta story.
Minolta began in Osaka, Japan, in 1928, when Kazuo Tashima established Nichi-Doku Shashinki Shōten, a Japanese-German camera shop. Its first product, the Nifcarette bellows camera, arrived in March 1929. The Minolta name was adopted for cameras in 1931, while the business operated as Chiyoda Kōgaku Seikō K.K. from 1937 to 1962 before taking Minolta as its final company name. Its camera history included the Minolta-35 rangefinder in 1947, the SR-2 35mm SLR in 1958, and the SR-T line with TTL metering in 1966. Minolta also collaborated with Leitz from 1972, building the Leica CL and contributing designs related to later Leica R cameras. In 1981 Saul Bass designed the Rising Sun logo, and the X-700 manual-focus SLR was introduced. The 1985 Alpha, Maxxum, and Dynax system became the first commercially successful autofocus SLR line. Minolta merged with Konica in 2003 to form Konica Minolta. In 2006, Konica Minolta ended camera and photo operations and transferred DSLR assets to Sony, whose Alpha A100 followed that year.
