Keep the Northwest Orient Airlines story close on cool-weather days. This cuffed beanie celebrates the airline name used from 1947 through 1986, an era shaped by Great Circle service to Japan and a growing trans-Pacific presence. It is an easy choice for aviation collectors, airport regulars, travelers, and fans of Northwest’s ties to Minneapolis-St. Paul, Detroit, Seattle, Anchorage, Tokyo, Republic, KLM, and Delta history.

Northwest Airlines began as Northwest Airways on September 1, 1926, founded by Colonel Lewis Brittin and originally based in Detroit, Michigan. Its early work centered on U.S. Post Office mail flying, with passenger service beginning in 1927 and international service to Winnipeg beginning in 1928. Renamed Northwest Airlines in 1934, it developed a northern transcontinental route linking Chicago, Minneapolis and Seattle. After World War II, its experience flying routes to Alaska helped establish a major trans-Pacific role. On July 15, 1947, it began direct U.S.-Japan service via its Great Circle route and adopted Northwest Orient Airlines branding from 1947 to 1986. Northwest merged with Minneapolis-St. Paul-based Republic Airlines on October 1, 1986, adding hubs at Detroit, Memphis and Minneapolis-St. Paul. A strategic alliance with KLM began in 1993. Northwest and Delta Air Lines announced their merger in 2008; Delta retained its name and branding, ended use of the Northwest name for flights on January 31, 2010, and became the successor carrier.

This cuffed beanie carries a lived-in street energy—soft, warm, and quietly bold. The low-profile embroidery sits on the cuff like a personal insignia: a small, slightly distressed logo with a touch of red that reads as both vintage and current. It slips on easily and stays put through commutes, late-night walks, and chilly market runs, adding a subtle graphic edge without shouting.

Wear it with a worn denim jacket, layered knit, or an oversized coat. It works for creatives who like to curate a look that’s casual but considered, for city cyclists who need dependable warmth, or for anyone who favors compact, tactile details. The hypoallergenic acrylic knit keeps things comfortable against the skin while the 12" cuff gives you styling flexibility—fold it high for warmth or roll it low for a slouchier silhouette. This is a small, everyday piece that quietly completes an outfit and ages into its own personality.
