The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway — better known simply as the Santa Fe — was one of the most legendary railroads in American history. Founded in 1859, the railroad helped open the American Southwest to commerce, tourism, and settlement, eventually building a massive network connecting Chicago, Texas, California, and points throughout the West.
Santa Fe became famous for much more than moving freight. Its passenger trains helped turn rail travel into an experience, carrying generations of travelers west aboard celebrated trains such as the Super Chief. The railroad aggressively promoted destinations like the Grand Canyon and the American Southwest, while its striking red-and-silver “Warbonnet” locomotives became some of the most recognizable machines ever to ride American rails.
The rise of highways and commercial aviation eventually ended Santa Fe’s passenger operations, but the railroad remained a major freight carrier and became an early leader in intermodal transportation. In 1995, Santa Fe and Burlington Northern combined, and by the end of 1996 the historic Santa Fe railroad had been merged into the company that ultimately became BNSF Railway.
