Bethlehem Steel was once one of the most powerful industrial companies in America. Headquartered in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the company supplied steel for skyscrapers, bridges, railroads, ships, and some of the country’s most ambitious construction projects. Its mills helped build everything from the Golden Gate Bridge to the machinery of two World Wars.

For generations, Bethlehem Steel was the kind of company that seemed too big, too important, and too deeply embedded in American industry to ever disappear.

Then the furnaces started going cold.

Foreign competition, aging facilities, rising costs, and decades of restructuring slowly weakened the giant. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2001, and its remaining assets were sold off soon after.

Bethlehem Steel helped build America. Unfortunately, nobody engineered a support beam strong enough for the balance sheet.
