Piedmont Airlines was a hometown airline that grew into one of the most important carriers in the eastern United States. Founded in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Piedmont began scheduled passenger service in 1948 with a small fleet of Douglas DC-3s and a regional network connecting communities across the Southeast.

Over the next four decades, Piedmont grew far beyond its regional roots. Its fleet expanded to include Boeing 727s, 737s, and eventually 767s, while Charlotte became one of the airline’s most important hubs. By the late 1980s, Piedmont was serving dozens of cities across the United States and even flying internationally to London.

USAir acquired Piedmont in 1987, and on August 5, 1989, the Piedmont operation was formally merged into USAir. The merger gave USAir a much stronger East Coast network and, most importantly, Piedmont’s growing Charlotte hub — a major airline hub that remains important today.
