Allegheny Airlines was a Pittsburgh-rooted local service carrier that operated scheduled routes primarily across the Eastern United States from 1953 to 1979. Its lineage began as All American Aviation Company, founded by Richard C. du Pont and Alexis Felix du Pont Jr., which started mail delivery on March 7, 1939. The company became All American Airways in 1949 as it shifted to passenger service and moved its headquarters from Pittsburgh to Washington National Airport. It adopted the Allegheny Airlines name on January 1, 1953. Network growth brought Detroit in 1956, Boston in 1960, La Guardia in 1964, Toronto in 1967, and additional southern and western destinations later on. The July 1968 Lake Central Airlines merger added Chicago and St. Louis, while the April 1972 Mohawk Airlines merger added Montreal, Minneapolis, and many New York cities. On October 28, 1979, the airline became USAir, later US Airways. US Airways was acquired by American Airlines in 2013.
