Aloha Airlines was a Honolulu-based U.S. airline that flew passengers from 1946 to 2008, with its hub at Honolulu International Airport, now Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. Publisher Ruddy F. Tongg Sr. founded it as Trans-Pacific Airlines, a charter competitor to Hawaiian Airlines, and began service on July 26, 1946, using a Douglas C-47 between Honolulu, Maui, and Hilo. Scheduled authority followed in 1949. The company adopted the TPA-The Aloha Airline name in 1950 and became Aloha Airlines in 1958. Its fleet progressed from DC-3s and turboprops to BAC One-Eleven jets and Boeing 737s, with the first 737-200 Funbirds entering service in 1969. Aloha later launched AlohaPass, acquired Princeville Airways in 1987 as Aloha IslandAir, and began mainland service in 2000. Financial pressures led to bankruptcies in 2004 and 2008; scheduled passenger flights ended March 31, 2008. Saltchuk acquired the cargo division in May 2008 through Aeko Kula Inc.
